Finding Evidence Syntheses, Systematic Reviews
In addition to searching for literature reviews as a document or publication type using the databases to which the library subscibes (Scopus, Web of Science, among others), there are a variety of recognized portals by discipline (or subject) for finding evidence syntheses and systematic reviews. You and your research team may find browsing these reviews as informative to your process, whether for your interest in the topic, as a check on whether a similar review has been conducted, or as a model for methodological process and published synthesis.
Conservation, Environmental Sciences
- CEE Database of Evidence Reviews (CEEDER)Open-access evidence service provided by the Collaboration for Environmental Evidence (CEE). The service collates all forms of evidence reviews and syntheses relevant to environmental management and policy interventions and anthropogenic impacts on the environment.
- CEE Evidence Syntheses (Collaboration for Environmental Evidence)Environmental Evidence Library of Evidence Syntheses. The library contains all systematic reviews and systematic maps that have been approved by the Collaboration for Environmental Evidence (CEE).
- Conservation EvidenceStudies, Actions, Synopses. Visit site to retrieve studies and synopses guiding conservation policies and management decisions, actions to take. Signature publications include What Works in Conservation and the Conservation Evidence Journal.
- Evidence for Nature and PeopleAccess current evidence on the impact of conservation on human well-being, decision making in conservation.
Education, International Development, Social Sciences
- 3ie Development Evidence Portal, International Initiative for Impact EvaluationRepository of evidence on what works in international development; includes systematic reviews and evidence gap maps.
- Campbell CollaborationInternational social science research network that produces high quality, open and policy-relevant evidence syntheses, plain language summaries and policy briefs.
- Chronological List of Systematic Reviews, EPPI Centre (Evidence for Policy & Practice Information Centre)The EPPI Centre provides access to its systematic reviews (as well as guidance to conduct) on topics spanning health, education, welfare and other public policy sectors.
- International Database of Education Systematic Reviews (IDESR)Database of published systematic reviews in education and a clearinghouse for protocol registration of ongoing and planned systematic reviews.
- What Works Clearinghouse, Intitute of Education Sciences (IES)Statistics, research, and evaluation arm of the US Department of Education. Provides access to research evidence (various study types) on which to ground education practice and policy.
Health Sciences, Medicine
- The Community Guide (What Works to Promote Healthy Communities)Collection of evidence-based recommendations and findings from the Community Preventive Services Task Force (CPSTF). CPSTF makes evidence-based recommendations about the effectiveness and economic impact of public health programs, services, and other interventions used in real-world settings.
- TRIP Medical Database (Turning Research Into Practice)Search engine designed to quickly and easily find clinical research evidence to support practice and/or care. The user can filter by review type, systematic reviews, evidence-based synopses.
Assessment Strategies for Existing Evidence Syntheses
- AMSTAR (A Measurement Tool to Assess Systematic Reviews)Checklist and guidance to assess the methodological quality of systematic reviews that include randomised or nonrandomised studies of healthcare interventions, or both. Two agreements are required during quality assessment ensuring lower risk of bias.
- CASP Checklists (Critical Appraisal Checklists, Critical Appraisal Skills Programme)Downloadable checklists to assist and accurately perform a critical appraisal across a number of different study types.
- ROBIS Tool (Risk of Bias in Systematic Reviews)Tool is completed in 3 phases: (1) assess relevance (optional), (2) identify concerns with the review process and (3) judge risk of bias. Phase 2 covers four domains through which bias may be introduced into a systematic review: Study eligibility criteria; Identification and selection of studies; Data collection and study appraisal; Synthesis and findings.
