Opportunities, Concerns and Caveats: An Introduction

How can I use AI responsibly?
If using AI tools during any phase of your review process, it will be essential to disclose, when writing your protocol and final manuscript, how and when you will have used any tool--whether it be for helping you to generate search terms and search syntax, for screening records, or for generating text in your manuscript.
In the interest of transparency, too, you will also need to determine whether the output of the AI tool is sufficiently credible and reproducible.
Importantly, too, if intending to publish your review, be sure to carefully read the journal's editorial policies and instructions to authors. Journal publishers are issuing statements about the use of AI tools (especially Large Language Models/LLMs) and which tools are considered appropriate and ethical to use in any research submitted for their consideration.

Tools for Evidence Synthesis/Systematic Review (various)
- JBI Sumari (JBI formerly Joanna Briggs Institute)Facilitates the entire systematic review process from protocol to report, and includes team and contributor management for effective and efficient collaboration.
- litsearchrR package to facilitate quasi-automatic search strategy development for systematic reviews.
- PICO PortalEvidence synthesis platform leveraging machine learning to accelerate research and innovation. Assists with identifying relevant citations, de-duplication, screening, full-text review, and evidence mapping.
- Review Manager (RevMan), Cochrane ReviewsBespoke software for managing and writing a Cochrane Review, now available for use with non-Cochrane reviews.
- SR Toolbox (now available; revised)Online catalog of guidance and tools to support various tasks within the evidence synthesis and systematic review processes. Can apply filters by review family (scoping, systematic,...) and/or review stage (search, screen, data extraction,...).
- Systematic Review AcceleratorFreely-available suite of tools to speed up steps in the Systematic Review (SR) process.
Text Mining
- PubMed PubReMinerUse to harvest keywords and subject headings (MeSH) terms. Copy and paste PubMed unique identifiers (PMIDs) and click "Start PubReMiner" to see how frequently keywords and MeSH terms are used in those articles.
