South Asian Studies Collection Descriptions

The South Asian Collections at University of Wisconsin-Madison Libraries include texts and other media on languages, literatures, cultures, history, agriculture, religions, government, colonialism, education, economy, and many more topics, relating to the Subcontinent, represented in the following countries: Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Tibet in Indian Diaspora, and spans from the classical period to contemporary times.  The language focus is on those that are taught more often including: Sanskrit, Pali, Hindi, Urdu, Tamil, Telugu, Nepali, and Tibetan, but also include those taught over the summer in the South Asian Summer Language Institute, including: Panjabi, Malayalam, Marathi, Bangla, Odiya, Sinhala, and most recently Dari, among others.
