Library Guide for Cite-Checkers : Books

This guide presents resources and strategies to assist students with citation checking, emphasizing sources that provide pdf images of documents wherever possible.

Finding Books

Search UW Madison's online catalog to find book and journal collections across the campus.  You will have to go to the holding library to locate the cited book or journal and use it there.  Keep in mind other cite-checkers may be looking for the same title(s) so please do not check these items out.

For assistance with the catalog, see the below video on finding books in the catalog.

Finding Books Using WorldCat

If a cited book or journal is not available on the UW Madison campus, use the WorldCat database to locate holdings at other libraries. Check with your editor or ILL Associate before placing any requests for cite-checking.  When ILL book requests arrive for cite-checking, the titles are placed on Course Reserve at the Law Library Circulation Desk.   ILL articles are emailed directly to the editors.

Please see the video below on requesting books via ILL.

Google Book Search

Google has digitized many books in a variety of disciplines and titles with expired copyright protection are frequently available in full text.  Recent titles will offer a "limited preview" with selected page ranges, however the table of contents and indexing are usually included.
