What is a Google Scholar Profile?

Google Scholar Profiles allow authors to claim and compile their Google Scholar publications and access citation metrics for those publications. Google Scholar Profiles can be either private or public, with public profiles being discoverable in Google and Google Scholar.

What are the benefits and limitations of Google Scholar Profiles?

Benefits:

  • It's free!
  • Links you to your scholarly contributions, in spite of name variations, name changes, or others having a name identical to yours (i.e. having a Google Scholar Profile helps to mitigate name ambiguity)
  • Increases the discoverability of your research outputs (if your Google Scholar Profile is set to public)
  • Gives you access to citation metrics, h-indices, and other data based on your publications that are included in your Google Scholar Profile

Limitations:

  • Google Scholar Profiles do not have Author IDs like ORCID and Scopus
  • If you choose to allow Google Scholar to automatically update your profile with new publications, automatic updates can be subject to error (i.e., incorrect publications may be assigned to your profile) and thus requires occasional review
  • Impact metrics are limited to data from Google Scholar, and can have inaccuracies

How do I get a Google Scholar Profile?

You will need a Google account before you can create a Google Scholar Profile.

Note: It is recommended that you create your Google account using a personal email address instead of your institutional email address. This will allow you to access the account even if you happen to leave UW-Madison.

To create a Google account:

  1. Click this link.
  2. Click "Create Account."
  3. Follow the instructions to finish creating your account.

Once you have created a Google account:

  1. Click this link.
  2. If prompted, sign in using your Google account credentials.
  3. Fill out the requested information (note: you do not need to fill out all fields). If you would like to be eligible for inclusion in Google Scholar search results, make sure to include your university email address in the form.
  4. Search for and select your publications.
  5. Select your update preferences.
  6. Select your privacy settings
  7. Click "Done."
