When the Starters Aren't Enough

The starters may not always yield the number or type of resources you need. In any of the situations below, it is better to go to one or more of the individual databases.

  • want to use more detailed or complex search strategies than the starters offer (synonyms, truncating words to their word-stems, combining concepts, etc.)
  • are researching the view from gender/women's studies and want to use more detailed or precise searches than the starters offer -- use the individual gender and women's studies and/or LGBTQ+ databases
  • want to search from the angle of the broad divisions of study (social sciences, humanities, or science)
  • are interested in how a particular discipline or disciplines (ex: history, health/medicine, education, psychology) approach(es) a topic
  • are working on a topic with international/area studies implications
  • need to do a *comprehensive* search on a subject, in which case you'll need to search numerous databases in several divisions and disciplines. You'll know you can stop looked when all you get are duplicates of material you've already gathered!
