Beginning Your Search

"" There is more to research than what Google can get you! As a student and researcher at UW-Madison, you have access to a wealth of information. We subscribe to thousands of journals and hundreds of databases, and we have a vast print collection. This page will help you search for articles and journals in your research area, and locate the full text. Don't be stopped by paywalls; if you can't find the article in our collections, we can almost always get you a copy through interlibrary loan.

Please contact us if you need assistance. We can help you construct efficient searches, identify different types of information you might use for your design project, and find full text of articles and other resources.

Information Sources Used in Design

As an engineer, your goal should be to locate and track information to adequately define the problem, generate multiple solutions, check that your idea is novel, and develop the best ethical solution that meets customer needs. For these reasons, information is used throughout the design process. Some information resources may be used during multiple stages. Below are some examples of information sources you might use in each stage of design.
