1. 老夫子全集 / Lao Fuzi quan ji

SUMMARY: Old Master Q (老夫子) is a Hong Kong comic since 1960s. The comic is still in publication today, and is the oldest Asian comic series in publication.

3. Moomin: The Complete Tove Jansson Comic Strip

SUMMARY: Children’s Literature is a very important part of the Scandinavian Literary Tradition. Not only are there infamous authors like Dane, Hans Christian Andersen (whom, it is argued is not a children’s author), and authors who were no-less famous like Swede, Astrid Lindgren (Pippi Longstocking), and Finn, Tove Jansson (The Moomins). They contributed to the culture of children’s literature, highlighting the experiences of children themselves, and their works are translated and loved in many different languages and cultures. A lesser known Swedish author, Selma Lägerlof, was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize in Literature wrote many children’s books. Children’s authors receive a higher stipend than their counterparts writing for adult audiences in some Nordic countries. The Moomins were created by Tove Jansson as something soft and comfy. A recurring theme is security and being accepted as family, no matter what.

SUMMARY: A graphic novel originally published in France about the February 1905 assassination of Russian Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich Romanov (fifith son of Tsar Alexander Il.).

6. Maus: A Survivor's Tale -  Maus I: My Father Bleeds History

SUMMARY: Maus is a graphic novel by American cartoonist Art Spiegelman. It tells the story of his father Vladek's experiences as a Polish Jew in the Polish cities of Czestochowa and Sosnowiec prior to and during Worlds War II and being sent to Auschwitz but surviving the Holocaust. The work represents Jews as mice and Germans as cats. In 1992 it became the first graphic novel to win a Pulitzer Prize.

9. Illustreret Danmarks-historie for Folket

SUMMARY: The series follows the history of Denmark in chronological order from the earliest times in antiquity to the approximate end of the Viking Age. Claus Deleuran, Danish comic strip creator, died suddenly in 1996 before he was able to complete his intended goal of depicting the comprehensive history through to modern times. He chose the title for his comic series, Illustreret Danmarkshistorie for Folket, relating to an earlier Danish reference work with the same title first published in 1853-55 by Danish historian and author Adam Fabricius. The fourth edition of Fabricius' Illustreret Danmarkshistorie for Folket was published in 1913-15 and is included in this exhibit. Deleuran's comic series was published during 1987-96 and first appeared in weekly installments in the popular Danish tabloid Ekstra-Bladet. The comic strip was later compiled into nine bound volumes. Volume 1 is shown in this exhibit. Deleuran re-created throughout his series a few of Danish illustrator Lorenz Frølich's work found in the earlier illustrated history.

11. Norse Mythology

SUMMARY: The Norse God Þórr, or Thor, has been reborn in Marvel Universe, but so too has there been a resurgence of popularity in versions like Neil Gaiman's Books on Mythology.

12. Great Indian classics

SUMMARY: Great Indian Classics is a comic book of simplified classical and historical literature from all over India. It allows the reader to understand complex tales and epics, originally written in a variety of languages. Although the simplification may be looked down upon by some, it allows for younger and newer readers access to literary works of art as well as a comparison of literature from a regional, national, continental, and even world view.

14. 弟の夫 / Otōto no otto

AUTHOR / CREATOR: 田亀源五郎 / Tagame Gengorō
LANGUAGE: Japanese
SUMMARY: "Otōto no otto" sensitively explores the themes of family, acceptance, and LGBTQ+ relationships through the story of a widowed man and his late husband's brother, who comes to stay with him in Tokyo.

15. Hexenblut

SUMMARY: In his autobiographical graphic novel, Lötzerich reveals how a doctor’s decision made an intersex child into a girl, setting off an intense search for sexual identity through rebellious punk teen years to the decision to undergo full male genital reconstruction.

16. Geschichten aus dem Grandhotel

SUMMARY: In 2015, students from the Projekt Comicwerkstatt in Augsburg, Germany, undertook a project on “Flight and Asylum,” conducting interviews at the Grandhotel Cosmopolis, an early innovator in collective asylum accommodation. The “comic reporting” approach opens new views into stories of escape and migration from various perspectives, in which suffering, humor, happiness, fear, mistrust, and compassion constantly alternate.

19. Comics and the World Wars: A Cultural Record

SUMMARY: Comics and the World Wars argues for the use of comics as a primary source by offering a highly original argument that such examples produced during the world wars act as a cultural record. Recuperating currently unknown or neglected works, this book demonstrates how these can be used for the study of both world wars. The authors reveal how sequential illustrated narratives used humor as a coping mechanism and a way to criticize authority, promoted certain forms of behavior and discouraged others. Comics also served as a deliberately inclusive educational strategy for reading wartime content, and became a barometer for contemporary popular thinking.
