HathiTrust Digital Library : Search

A introduction to using the HathiTrust Digital Library and HathiTrust Research Center for computational analysis and text mining.

How to Search in HathiTrust

The search bar is available at the top of every page of the HathiTrust Digital Library and website. The search bar allows you to begin your search with two options in the dropdown menu:

  • Website: This option allows you to search the information on the HathiTrust website but does NOT include the collection's content.
  • Collection: This option searches texts in the HathiTrust Digital library collection.

Search Options

  • Field Options: When searching the collection, the default is set to search "Full Text & All Fields" which will search the text of all the volumes in the whole digital library. Selecting "All Fields" in the dropdown narrows your search to information about the book such as Title, Publisher, and Author. If you know the Title, Publisher, Author, or other information about the book, you can select the specific field from the dropdown.
  • Advanced Search: Clicking on the "Advanced Search" link under the search bar will help you refine your search by allowing you to enter information for multiple fields at a time.
  • View Options: The default setting for searching the collection is for "Full View Only" items, meaning the search is restricted to items that are in the public domain or licensed as open access. To include copyright restricted items, go to the Advanced Search page and deselect the "Full View Only" checkbox under View Options.

How to Cite Your Sources

The HathiTrust Digital Library makes it easy to cite your sources as you research. You can do this one of two ways:

  • Catalog Record: You can use the citation tool in the catalog record labeled "Cite this" to generate citations formatted in either APA or MLA format.
  • Zotero: HathiTrust integrates with the Zotero browser extension to pull information about an item into your citation manager.
