HathiTrust Digital Library : Collect

A introduction to using the HathiTrust Digital Library and HathiTrust Research Center for computational analysis and text mining.

Curated Collections in HathiTrust

In the HathiTrust Digital Library, you can create your own collection of saved items. You can make your collection public and viewable to everyone using the HathiTrust Digital Library or you can make it private and visible only to yourself. You can use a collection in HathiTrust to:

  • Save works for future reference
  • Search within your own collection
  • Build bibliographies for your own research
  • Curate materials about a topic for researchers to explore
  • Share reading lists with your class
  • Import the collection as a workset into the HathiTrust Research Center for text analysis

How to Create Your Own Collection

You will need to log in either as a member or a guest to create a collection and save items. Collections created when you are not logged in are temporary, so be sure to log in if you want to save it. You can add items to your collection one of two ways:

  • From a Full Text & All Fields search
  •  While viewing an item in the Book Viewer

Please see HathiTrust's page on Building Your Own Collections or watch the video below. Both tutorials also cover downloading the metadata from your collection. Metadata can be downloaded as a tab-separated values (TSV) file and a JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) file. JSON files can be used to create worksets in the HTRC portal.
