What is Mukurtu?

Mukurtu is a Content Management System designed for and by Indigenous people. It was originally created in 2007 in collaboration with the Warumungu community as the Mukurtu Wampurrarni-kari Archive. Today, it is an open source software for community archives. Notable features include TK (Traditional Knowledge) labels for third-party or public domain materials that require additional context, cultural protocols to adjust access based on cultural values, and community records for digital heritage items that require more than one record.

Mukurtu Midwest is a part of the Mukurtu Hubs and Spokes Initiative. This initiative allows many more communities (spokes) to use the program with the assistance and support of Hubs. Mukurtu Midwest is a Hub hosted by WiLS in partnership with the iSchool at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
