SOIL SCI 728 Graduate Seminar (Fall 2024; Spring 2025) : Researcher Profiles
Introduction to researcher profiles
Researcher profiles link an individual to their research outputs, funding, and affiliations. Some profile platforms require registration while others are generated within literature databases, but allow for management. Our librarians can assist you with building profiles to showcase your work. See the libraries' guide to Researcher Profiles.
Choosing to devote some time to building your researcher profile in relevant platforms will help you:
- Increase your online presence and make your research more visible and discoverable
- Broaden your research impact through shares, likes, follows and downloads of your work
- Eliminate confusion over variations of your name and ensure that your research is easily identifiable as belonging to you
- Find and curate your citation metrics and h-index--(Learn more about metrics with our guide)
- Connect and collaborate with other researchers
- Meet funder requirements
Creating and Managing your ORCID ID
It is free and easy to sign up for an ORCID ID. An increasing number of publishers are requiring you to have an ORCID ID in order to submit your manuscript. Even if an ORCID ID is not required, there are many reasons to create one:
- Reliably connects you with your contributions and affiliations
- Saves you time – “enter once, re-use often”
- Improves recognition for you and your research outputs
- Alleviates mistaken identity
Our guide to researcher identity platforms provides support for creating and maintaining an ORCID ID.
Google Scholar Profile
Google Scholar Profiles bring together an author's work within Google Scholar. You must sign up in order to have a Google Author Profile. Google Scholar profiles are private by default, but can be made public by users. When a profile is made public and has been linked to a verified institutional email address, a link to the profile will accompany the author's name when the author or articles by the author are searched.
Creating a Google Scholar Profile will make your work more discoverable in Google, and provide you with access to your citation metrics from Google Scholar.
