Library Session & Guide for LSC 212

This course guide is designed to supplement the information in the LSC 212 online library module in Canvas and provide general guidance for navigating the resources and services available through the UW-Madison Libraries.

Library Session Outline

  • Modeling a process for entering the scholarly conversation:
    • Considering your topic. Why does it interest you? What do you know and what more do you need to know?
    • Strategies for fact checking
    • Finding and evaluating background information to get an overview, pull keywords, and narrow your topic
    • Exploring the existing scholarly conversation with research articles in library databases
  • Work time

With a partner, discuss the following questions

  • How were you inspired to choose your research topic? Where did you hear your “they say” (e.g., personal experience, news articles, scholarly articles, social media, etc.)?
  • What have you done or could you do to get a better understanding of your topic?

Fact Checking Activity

  • On your own: take 5 minutes to explore this publication from the Co2 Coalition
  • With a peer: take 5 min to discuss the publication -- when do they fill in the template?
