Multi-Subject Databases
- Academic Search PremierAcademic Search Premier is a general academic index with almost 3,000 magazines and journals from every academic discipline and provides the full-text of more than 1,200.
- Google ScholarGoogle Scholar enables you to search specifically for scholarly literature, including peer-reviewed papers, theses, books, preprints, abstracts and technical reports from all broad areas of research. Use Google Scholar to find articles from a wide variety of academic publishers, professional societies, preprint repositories and universities, as well as scholarly articles available across the web.
- JSTORJSTOR is a full-text journal database which provides access to more than 1,200 titles in the fields of African-American studies, anthropology, architecture, Asian studies, biological sciences, botany, ecology, economics, education, film, finance, folklore, history, language, literature, mathematics, middle east studies, music, philosophy, political science, population/demography, religion, sociology, and statistics. Coverage begins with volume one of each title and continues to within 3 to 5 years of the most current issue, depending on the title.
Subject-Specific Databases
Multi-subject databases are great for getting starting with your research. You may want to go beyond them to search databases that focus on specific subjects. Below are databases in the fields of Asian studies, health, medicine, psychology, and religion that are relevant to this course.
Asian Studies
- Bibliography of Asian StudiesThe Bibliography of Asian Studies lists journal articles about Asia in Western language journals and books. Citations to books were discontinued in 1992. Covers all subjects, particularly in the humanities and social sciences, pertaining to East, South and Southeast Asia published worldwide 1971 - present.
Religion & Philosophy
- ATLA Religion Database with ATLA SerialsATLA Religion Database (formerly ATLA Religion Index) indexes more than 600 of the leading journals in the field of religion and theology. The index also includes essays from multi-author works and book reviews.
- Philosopher's IndexPhilosopher's Index contains citations and abstracts from books and more than 350 journals of philosophy and related interdisciplinary fields published in the U.S. and other western countries. Major philosophy journals in other languages are included since 1967. Subject coverage includes aesthetics, epistemology, ethics, logic, and metaphysics, and the philosophy of related disciplines such as education, history, law, religion, and science.
Searching Within Databases
This tutorial shows you how to search for articles in article databases. It shows you how to use AND to combine terms, limit to articles from scholarly journals or by date of publication, use subject headings and abstract to find keywords, find full text of articles, and use tools to generate or export citations.
Search Tips
- Use AND to combine different words to find all those words, in any order.
- Vishnu AND Tamil Nadu
- Use OR to combine similar words or synonyms or variations
- Tamil Nadu OR South India
- Perumal OR Tirumal
- Shiva OR Siva
- Use quotation marks ( " ") to search words as a phrase
- "Tamil Nadu"
- Use an asterisk ( * ) to find varied endings of words and singular and plural forms.
- god* to find god, gods, goddess, goddesses
- Look at Subjects to find additional keywords and use them to find relevant and specific results.
- Look for an option to limit to Scholarly Journals on the left side of search results in most databases
