By law, certain types of government information, including regulations, is published in the Canada Gazette. It began as single publication in 1841 but was separated into distinct components beginning in 1947. Part II includes all rules, regulations, and proclamations, similar to the U.S. Federal Register.
There have been five published consolidations of the regulations (1874, 1889, 1949, 1955 and 1978). These are similar to the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations.
Federal administrative regulations use the following numbering system: S.O.R. for "Statutory Orders and Regulations" followed by year and number
