CHEM 547: Advanced Organic Chemistry (Fall 2023) : ChemDraw

The ChemDraw Wizard

While there are a few ok ChemDraw tutorial videos out there, the ones made by Pierre Morieux, the ChemDraw Wizard, may be the most amazing. Below are links to his content:

Accessing ChemDraw from UW-Madison

UW-Madison provides ChemDraw 19 Professional Edition to all students and staff through the Campus Software Library.

Once you login with your NetID and access the Software Library, click on the option for ChemDraw. Follow the instructions to download, install, and activate ChemDraw for either Mac or PC. If you have trouble with the installation, you will need to contact the DoIT Help Desk. You can also get support from ChemDraw directly.

Learning to Use ChemDraw

A complete user guide with built in tutorial exercises is available within ChemDraw. Once installed, go to the Help menu and choose any of the options. Any of the options will get you into the guide. From there, search for the content you want or browse through it by following the sections on the left side.  I highly suggest looking through this guide - even just the Quick Start section will help you immensely. For deep knowledge of ChemDraw, start with the Introduction -> About the Guide section; it will explain all the conventions used in the guide. Also, the Shortcut and Hotkeys section is very helpful for those who want to become more efficient with ChemDraw.

Hot Keys Guide

To access this guide within ChemDraw, go to File --> Open Samples --> Magic Hotkeys Cheat Sheet.

Connecting to SciFinder

You can connect directly to SciFinder from ChemDraw and have it search a structure you've drawn! Under the Search Menu, choose SciFinder. You'll need to use our proxy code to get this to work. Copy the following text and put it into the proxy option: https://scifinder-cas-org.ezproxy.library.wisc.edu/scifinder/view/scifinder/scifinderExplore.jsf

Here is a video of how to get this connection setup:
