Essential information:

  • Start your literature searches and find information about library locations, services, and more at the UW-Madison Libraries website, library.wisc.edu
  • Find books, music, videos, and more using the catalog search.
  • Find the right databases to search for the articles, conference papers, eBooks, and other resources you need using the database search.
  • Your WisCard is your library card for physical materials.
  • Access electronic materials using your NetID.
  • We have many libraries on campus. You are welcome at all of them!

Access to Materials

You have free access through the UW-Madison Libraries’ subscriptions to nearly any journal/article you will need. If you are on campus or using the campus VPN, you will often see a note on publishers’ websites that says ‘Access Provided by UW-Madison’. If you see this note, you will not be prompted for payment to get the full text of an article.  If this note isn't present and you encounter a paywall, you will likely still be able to get access through the UW-Madison Libraries. You may need to search for the article in a library database in order to find it or request a copy via ILL.

You will have access to your UW-Madison Libraries account during and post-graduation per the following guidelines:

Undergraduate, Graduate, and Special Students

  • Your account will become ACTIVE as soon as you appear as enrolled in a current or future term.
  • Your account will remain ACTIVE for as long as you remain enrolled.
  • Your account will be DEACTIVATED according to the following calendar:
    • Last active enrollment record expiration date is between Sep 1 and Jan 31: Patron expiration date is Feb 10
    • Last active enrollment record expiration date is between Jan 1 and Aug 31: Patron expiration date is Sep 15
    • Your account will be deactivated immediately if you withdraw.
  • Anyone can access online resources on computers in campus libraries, even after graduation.

Note: Increasingly journals are offering free and legal access to some or all of the articles they publish. Tools like Unpaywall may also allow you to freely and legally access some of the articles you’re interested in, once you have graduated and no longer have access to UW-Madison Libraries’ collections.
