About this guide...

This Research Guide provides resources on gender identity and gender expression:

Gender: A socially constructed binary system of classification that ascribes qualities of masculinity and femininity to people. Gender characteristics can change over time and are different between cultures.

Gender Identity: A person's innermost concept of self as male or female or both or neither—how individuals perceive and refer to themselves in terms of their gender. This gender identity may or may not correspond to the person's body or designated sex at birth

Gender Expresssion: External manifestation of one’s gender identity, usually expressed through “masculine,” “feminine” or gender-variant behavior, clothing, haircut, voice or body characteristics.
