HISTORY 319: The Vietnam Wars (Fall 2025) : Find Primary Documents & Personal Narratives

This collection contains page images and searchable text of about 900 periodicals created by or for U.S. military personnel during the Vietnam War era. Most were produced underground by U.S. soldiers or veterans who opposed the war, using mimeograph machines or other inexpensive technology.

The Sixties: Primary Documents and Personal Narratives, 1960 to 1974 documents the key events, trends, and movements in 1960s America vividly conveying the zeitgeist of the decade and its effects into the middle of the next. Alongside over 70,000 pages of letters, diaries, and oral histories, there are more than 30,000 pages of posters, broadsides, pamphlets, advertisements, and rare audio and video materials. The collection is further enhanced by dozens of scholarly document projects, featuring richly annotated primary-source content that is analyzed and contextualized through interpretive essays by leading historians.

A UW project to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the bombing of Sterling Hall which took place on August 24, 1970. The collection consists of excerpts from interviews with UW-Madison faculty, students, staff, and Madison community members recounting their experiences of the bombing and its aftermath.
