Citing Archival Sources

Citing material you find in the archives can be less clear than citing published items like a book or journal article. Just remember that the purpose of citation is to communicate where you found your sources and help your reader find them. In general, try to gather the following information:

  • Description of document including the creator
  • Document date
  • Location information
  • Name of archival collection
  • Name of repository
