It's free and easy to sign up for an ORCID ID. All NIH Training Grants require participants to link their ORCID IDs to their personal profiles in eRA Commons, and an increasing number of publishers are requiring them to submit your manuscript. Even if an ORCID ID is not required, there are many reasons to create one:
