Ebling Library Orientation Guide : Research Support

First Steps For Your Research

UW-Madison and Ebling Library provide research support in a variety of ways.  Here are some common tools and resources our librarians recommend to help researchers work more efficiently:

Citation Managers

Citations Managers as EndNote, EndNote Basic, Mendeley, or Zotero are software tools for managing your citations.  Citation Managers save you time and effort when citing your sources by:

  • helping you save and organize your search results for future retrieval.
  • integrating into word processing software to make in-text citing and bibliography creation easier.
  • automatically pulling in the full-text of articles that you wish to read.

For more information on choosing and getting started using a citation manager, see Ebling's Citation Management guide.

Creating and Managing your ORCID ID

It's free and easy to sign up for an ORCID ID. All NIH Training Grants require participants to link their ORCID IDs to their personal profiles in eRA Commons, and an increasing number of publishers are requiring them to submit your manuscript. Even if an ORCID ID is not required, there are many reasons to create one:

  • Reliably connects you with your contributions and affiliations
  • Saves you time – “enter once, re-use often”
  • Improves recognition for you and your research outputs
  • Alleviates mistaken identity

Visit UW Madison Libraries' ORCID Researcher Identifier guide for more information on creating and maintaining research identity.
