One Health at Madison

The One Health, One Medicine initiative at UW-Madison is a multidiscilinary approach to global health issues.

There are a number of programs and departments that study issues concerning the interaction between humans, animals, and the ecosystem that this portal seeks to serve.  For example, we have a Master of Public Health degree program, the Global Health Certificate Program, wildlife diseases studies through the School of Veterinary Medicine and other units on campus, and ecosystem health initiatives through the Nelson Insititue of Environmental Studies and the Center for Sustainability and the Global Environment (SAGE).

In a nutshell:

"The One Health concept is a worldwide strategy for expanding interdisciplinary collaborations and communications in all aspects of health care for humans and animals. The synergism achieved will advance health care for the 21st century and beyond by accelerating biomedical research discoveries, enhancing public health efficacy, expeditiously expanding the scientific knowledge base, and improving medical education and clinical care. When properly implemented, it will help protect and save untold millions of lives in our present and future generations."
